Isaac Webb was born in Chester, Conn., in 1798. He graduated from Yale College and became president of Nichols Academy in Dudley, Mass., from 1823-1824. Soon afterwards, he received his law degree. He was a member of the Yale Law School faculty and also a tutor at the college. Webb opened a law office in Middletown, Conn., in 1827. Rutherford B. Hayes was born in Delaware, Ohio, in 1822 and earned degrees from Kenyon College and Harvard Law School before starting a career as a lawyer in Cincinnati. Hayes served as a major general in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War and was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1864.
